This week we’ve been talking about and watching videos about online dating. Online dating is a unique experience for everyone who partakes, no two people will ever have the same outcome since it is such a diverse and individualized experience. Online dating has been on the rise for several years now and it seems more and more people are attempting to find love on the internet instead of the old fashion way of meeting people face-to-face.
As a young women in college I don’t feel the need to try online dating since I go to a school full of 40 thousand plus students. However watching the video and seeing some of the stories really opened up my view of online dating. The couple that met online and found love even though they were from New Jersey and Iceland shows the positive of online dating and how it can bring people who would of never met before the internet together. With more dating apps and websites appearing everyday its no surprise that more people are willing to try online dating.
The “Huffington Post” recently published an article about how although it may seem the rising trend of dating, online dating will eventually hit it’s tipping point. The article examines although online dating offers people a whole now world of dating options, eventually people will want to revert into old habits of dating face-to-face. The article discuses several negatives of online dating which we also talked about in class such as dissection on profiles and the fact that there is a delay in responses drags people away from an online conversation.
Today there is plenty of CMC research, TV shows (Catfish or documentaries), or articles that can provide people with plenty of information about online dating. As discussed in class online dating started becoming a big thing in the 90’s with the rise of technology but it also comes with great risk. Having access to millions of new people also exposes you to misconception and the potential to get taken advantage of. This also is expressed in the Huffington Post article where it states people will eventually be turned off from exposing themselves so much to online dating. I can relate to the article and have seen the negative side of online dating through my friend’s experiences however I think there is also a future with more technological advances and more CMC research the world of online dating also has the chances to improve. If online dating can protect people from the harms of online dating there is a chance of the online dating trend to continue skyrocketing, however I think without that protection people will eventually stop being so eager towards online dating and find a new way to interact with new people.
