Dark Side of CMC
The dark side of CMC explains the negativity of CMC and how
it impacts individuals. Prior to our last exam we discussed the different
understandings of the Dark Side of CMC. Trolling, negative how-to-guides,
pornography, hate speech and internet addiction; all of these are problematic
and continue to occur. Trolling is the act when people online purposely
disrupts others online (the online community). Those who participate in this
behavior find it very amusing to discomfort online users. Negative
how-to-guides are guides you can find on the internet advocating and
instructing terrorism, suicide and eating disorders? These two things alone are
horrible and show what the internet has become and how it will get worse.
Pornography has always been prevalent but now it is all over
the internet and easier to come across while using the web. These website have
millions of users, which some develop pornography addictions and a small
percentage lose interest in relational sex because of their addiction to
internet sex. Hate- speech attacks a person or group based on ethnicity, race,
sexual orientation, religion, or gender. Fairly common online. Unacceptable to
hate FTF so they do it online. Motivated by racial, religious, and lifestyle
differences. All of this is ok online because of our “freedom of speech”. This
is very upsetting because the world is cruel as it is already, but people feel
more comfortable posting rude and nasty comments online about others and feel
it’s acceptable. In their eyes it’s acceptable because they can say whatever
they feel, but on the other hand it is very upsetting to those, who are being
attacked. Saying things out of the ordinary to someone of a certain race,
sexual orientation or any different face to face can lead to confrontation (a
fight). Therefore people feel safe to say what they want online about the next
person because they have a hidden agenda. The anonymity of being able to say
what you what online and face no consequences is a main factor.
Internet addiction overall I believe is a growing problem
with today’s generation and it just remains to grow. It is frightening and becoming
more obvious to the damage it has caused on our generation. Each day I have
Italian class, my professor bickers about how all the youth does today is have
their hands and eyes glued to their phones or any electronic device. He asks every
day, “Why don’t you guys talk amongst each other? or maybe study Italian before
class begins, instead of being on your phone?” We are in deniable as a whole when it concerns
internet addiction. I know one thing we all partake in, “lying to family
members or friends about how much time you spend online”. We are all guilty in this,
but overall the internet has become this very bad thing, that people can’t seem
to shake.
